The News, Talk, Sights and Sounds of the Warfleigh Neighborhood

There may be funding to do some beautification efforts in Warfleigh, such as clearing and planting some of the city-owned land and painting murals on the old retaining wall at Riverview this spring and summer. Tom Healy of Broad Ripple Village Assn is working to coordinate the plans, but first he needs to know if there are volunteers willing to help with these efforts. See the note below from Tom. If you would like to help, you can contact Tom directly at applepress@sbcglobal(dot)net, or send me a note at bcrsn@att(dot)net.

Tom Writes:

1) design a pocket garden @ old Meridian & Riverview. We need to come up with a plan to 1) remove unwanted vegetation like honeysuckle & wild grape vines and 2) come up with a plant list of native perennials, tree(s) and bulbs. This would be a perfect project for any neighbors who are Master Gardeners. Are there any handypersons willing to build a bench or arbor? That could be cool too.

2) Would there be any interest in planting the "triangle" on Meridian just south of 62nd? If so, would also need someone to make sure the
neighbors are OK with it; ID plants; create a plan (for installation
and maintenance.)

3) need to see if there are folks who want to see murals painted along the White River on Riverview.
The project is complex and will require lots of time but it doesn't have to happen all in one day. I know we can get High School & College kids
to help with the actual painting and maybe even with the prepping. But
we need Warfleigh residents to take "ownership" of making sure this
happens.

In regards to the "old retaining wall" mentioned in the email...is this in regards to the ~4 ft high concrete wall that stretches from roughly 64th to roughly 67th St?

If so, as a resident who lives directly across the street from this wall, I am strongly opposed to the painting of a mural. There is an abundance of natural beauty along Riverview, and if anything, conscripting a bunch of "highschool and college kids" to paint their rendition of art, nature, or who knows what, is going to detract from the natural beauty already present.

It may sound great to the people who occasionally or even routinely walk / bike along Riverview, but it's entirely different when you live directly across the street and would have to look at it every single day. Our sun room looks right out on to Riverview, and the trees, flowers and natural Summer and Fall beauty provide quite a scene. Please don't alter this by making the center of attention an artificial, brigthly-painted mural.

Hi Joe,

Good to know, thanks for your comments. Before any efforts are expended, we'll have to be sure that the neighbors are in agreement. I will pass this on to Tom.

Thank you.

Don't forget maintenance of the mural. The ones along the Monon down South of 54th are looking pretty shabby now.

I too live on Riverview across from the wall and completely agree with Joe. Currently, the wall is concrete and easy to ignore while a mural would scream for attention. Griff's foresight on mural maintenance is a concern as well.

I pray and hope that the wall across the street from my house does not get painted. I do not think we need that now.... or ever. I think there is enough color outside during the spring and summer months and painting a wall across the street from homes does not sound like a good idea.

Yep, your prayers are answered :-) There was no support from anyone for a mural and this has been communicated to Tom et al. However, there was a lot of positive feedback on the idea of cultivating small garden patches throughout the neighborhood. I'm not sure where this goes from here, I think a lot will depend on funding for flowers, etc. Once we have more input on the garden, we'll send out messages, and probably recruit volunteers.
