Event Description

KIB’s Great Indy Cleanup is an anti-litter program in partnership with the City of Indianapolis designed to combat heavy litter and debris that has accumulated in public spaces such as streets, alleys, greenspaces and waterways.

Update:

We will begin at 10am on Saturday morning on 64th street between Central and Park. The largest target area will be the alley north of 64th street, east of Central.  After that, there are a few other potential problem areas.  Time permitting, we'll sweep the College Ave bridge over the canal.

We will be meeting the packer truck at the CVS at noon to start picking up piles of trash from the morning cleanup.

We're going to be hitting the alleys north of 63rd street between Central and Broadway up to Riverview.  Please message me or post below if you'd like to volunteer and have a suggestion for a cleanup location.

Below are the quadrant dates for the April 2014 Great Indy Cleanup citywide event.

  • Saturday, April 19th Gary Loveless & Charles Ingram (Gary Loveless is the Neighborhood Liaison for Warfleigh)
  • Resources We are currently assigned a packer truck at noon.
  • Target Area Alleys east of Central, north of 63rd street by request. I think this would be a great way to see what we can do with the city's help removing debris.
  • Warfleigh Start Time 10:00am The packer truck will meet us at CVS at noon, so I'd like to get a two hour head start to clean alleys so we'll be ready to load the truck.

What KIB provides
  • Packer Trucks / Dumpsters – In conjunction with the City of Indianapolis KIB will provide dumpsters and removal (may not be used for personal purposes). During the dates of the April Great Indy Cleanup Event City packer trucks are also available for community cleanups.
  • Cleanup supplies – Trash bags, gloves, and water (while supplies last)

Additional Cleanup Resources

Please Remember:
The dumpster provided is NOT for personal use (cleaning out garages, basements, homeowner association property, etc.) or the personal use of volunteers/neighbors. Disposal of the collected trash is donated by South Side Landfill, and is intended for cleanup of public spaces only. Failure to comply jeopardizes the neighborhood’s ability to benefit from future resources from KIB.

Steve,

Will the city be providing a trash truck?  I am particularly interested in cleaning up the alley behind my house.  It is overgrown with brush and trees and is impassable.

Thank you,

Brent Nibarger

Hey Brent,

Thanks for your interest!  I thought we might give this a shot this year to see how many of us wanted to give the area a good springtime cleaning.

I'm trying to find out what was already planned for the area since this is one of the established dates for the cleanup program.  If we can decide for Warfleigh, we may be able to choose between a dumpster that sits in a central location in the area or a trash truck that may be able to follow around volunteers that are collecting debris.

Some of this will probably depend on how many people are interested in a Spring cleanup as well.  I'll be adding a post to the forum soon and Tammy Stevens from KIBI will be at our March meeting to talk a bit about this and other programs they sponsor.

Okay sounds good.  I will be at the March meeting as well.  Again my alley is horrible.  Most of the brush will require a chainsaw, which I can provide.  But we will need a trashtruck to follow along.

We will know more before or during the March meeting Brent. They already have trucks allocated, so we need to find out how to schedule them for a driveby through our area.

It may be best to focus on alleys this year too since we have an abundance of them in the area!  If more people come forward to volunteer their time for the cleanup we'll have a better idea what areas need attention.

I won't be able to make the meeting in March but am interested in helping clean up.

Good to hear!  I think we may want to focus on alleys this year, since Warfleigh is loaded with them and they typically receive less attention than our main roads.

If you have suggested locations, this is probably as good a place as any to post them so we can start figuring out where we'll be working on April 19th, and where the trash trucks will need to swing by.

The alley behind my house is also rough. Its at the north end where Broadway St hits Riverview Dr.

Discussed at tonight's meeting was KIB is distributing trash bags through the libraries. Check at your local branch come April 1 for free bags.

Our alley is rough too. Behind Central in the 6400 block. We are planning to clear out all the scrappy half-trees and whatnot in the alley. How can we arrange to have KIBI take these away on the 19th?

Thanks for the interest and the input everyone!

If you haven't already, please post here or message me directly with locations that you think need some attention (and also that you'd like to volunteer to help clean).

Please give a description that includes which streets your alley is between i.e. The alley between Central and Washington Blvd between 63rd and 64th street.  This will help us figure out where we can focus our efforts as well as with scheduling the packer truck to hall stuff away.
